As part of an arrangement to cover his family's debt to the Blue King, Leland (a level 1 fighter) must accompany Enar the Berserker and Vizzy the Pixie into the former nesting caves of long-vanquished dragons to recover scrolls left there by a thief. The runes covering the walls of the caves are quite dangerous (I'm thinking magical TRAPS), and monstrous creatures may also dwell within the arcane place, but Leland has a job to do.
|It's a modest set up: graphing notebook, pencil, rules, and dice.|
I decide that Leland, Enar, and Vizzy will have to enter three cavern/rooms before being able to find the scrolls. For each subsequent cavern entered, I'll roll a d10 and find the scrolls on a roll that is equal to or less than the number of caverns thus far entered.
Coming back through the room with the reverse gravity rune, the trio triggers the rune, and Leland and Enar fall upwards, while Vizzy's flight keeps her unhurt. The damage is minimal, but I have the spitting cobra egg go splat on Enar's face. OK...I see the theme of this adventure - abuse the berserker.
I ran combat with Leland and Vizzy in the fray while blind Enar angrily had to hang back, hold the torch, and listen to the delicious sounds of battle - agony for a berserker. Vizzy actually slays a Gnoll, while Leland seriously wounds the other. The remaining Gnoll grabs the scrolls and runs into the next cavern. Leland and Vizzy give chase, and the frustrated Enar, lusting for battle, blindly follows - and promptly falls into the Gnolls' hole. (GM fiat at its best.)
